How I started to draw in graffiti. Starting-out is always difficult. This is why I want to explain how I did it . My first Graffiti was “Limp Bizkit” from the album cover from “Significant other”. Do you know it? I loved this rock band yet still love em and decided to draw in it since it impressed me. I was lucky and was quite satisfied with my first drawing.

So this is my first job for you is: 1. get a pencil 2. have a sheet of paper 3. get an eraser 4. look for a Graffiti you like with Google Image Search, in places you can easily identify the letters. For Instance “simple style Graffiti” may be used being a key word . 5. and draw it!

Maybe you may need a handful of tries at first . This is nothing to bother about . Noone is often a professional immediately . So practice, practice, practice, practice! I know you`ll make it!

In the first part I will discuss how I started and provide you with an initial hint steps to start out. The second part can be a tutorial, that is split up into two parts. The first part contains the steps to your first Graffiti Tag. The second one is about transforming the Graffiti Tag in to a Graffiti Piece. Let’s go!

Draw your first tag. After you have done the first Graffiti, visit our Collection of Graffiti Letters. Think about a name you would like to use as being a sprayer. No ideas yet? Just begin together with your real name! I provide several designs for every letter. You can search for letters by hitting the buttons on top . Create the first Graffiti Tag using this method . So step by step : 1. obtain a marker this time ; not a pencil; Tags look way better if you are using the correct marker – I used a Edding 500 Marker to the example Tag below. The Grog Cutter 08 XFP – Death Black can be a very good marker at the same time and way cheaper . 2. have a small note 3. Go to our variety of Graffiti Letters 4. Search for the letters for the name Example. I choose the phrase “Ether”. 5. You can optionally add drips, arrows and big serifs as highlights for a Tag like I did.

How to draw graffiti: the first graffiti piece in 7 steps : You have redrawn the first Graffiti? You have created your first Tag? Nice! So let’s go forward !. Graffiti Pieces are extremely complex. To start , I would recommend you to take your tag and transform it in to a Graffiti Piece. Every Graffiti Piece includes these parts: 1. The Fill-In: colored areas 2. the outline: colored or black line round the fill-ins 3. a 3D-shadow 4. an identification 5. an extra outline across the whole piece 6. optionally: the tag name with the sprayer 7. optionally: highlights 8. optionally: 4 seasons of creation.

I use the following materials: 1. regular notepad – e.g.: printing paper 2. soft uncolored eraser 3. pencil with 2B mine hardness 4. Fine Liners for Highlights and small areas 5. Copic Markers Multiliner 0.5 for outlines 6. At least a basis group of Copic Ciao markers for Fill-ins. I have the large pair of Copic Ciao markers markers!. So, let’s dive straight into it:

STEP 1: Trace your graffiti tag. If you used a marker you will likely forecast the Graffiti Tag in the event you put a notepad onto it . So the first task is it in order to the sides in the lines using a pencil. But leave a small amount of space between the edge of the marker and your new pencil line. So the letter gets bigger. The result should look like the image shown below. Not that bad actually, but we should improve.

STEP 2: Improve the graffiti. The form in the whole Graffiti is vital at the same time . The “E” at the beginning is greater than the “R” in the end . So I chose to allow it to be smaller and add arrows on both sides to help it become a concise form.(red) I also added serifs or made them more technical .(blue circles). In typography, a serif will be the small extra stroke found at the end with the main vertical and horizontal strokes of some letters. In Graffiti it`s easy to have used them to make you Piece more complicated . I also added forms which help the dynamic from the graffiti and make it more complicated.

The result looks like the image below. This step usually implies a great deal of trials and errors and takes a little while . So don’t be sad if your Graffiti immediately does not resemble you need to . Even should you are practised to draw Graffiti, this step will require a little while and intensive use in the eraser.

STEP 3: Redraw the lines with a fineliner. The next step is less difficult . Take your Copic Markers Multiliner 0.5 or possibly a Fineliner pen and redraw your pencil lines. Wait a while afterwards permit along with dry after which erase each of the pencil lines. The result will want to look this way.

A cheap printer with copy function like Canon PIXMA MG3620 or possibly a similar product ought to do the project . I use a previous version of the printer series and it works well but there are numerous others which work quite similar.

STEP 4: Color your graffiti piece. To make the coloring more advanced , I recommend that you always draw gradients. In this case i colored the full Graffiti Piece in a big gradient. If you would like to help make your piece to look even more technical , you`ll have to include a different gradient to each letter. The Copic Ciao markers have become good for drawing gradients. I have not achieved it with another marker yet.

Which color scheme to choose ? In general I recommend that you use complementary colors for – foreground and background – or – fill-ins and shadows. If you would like to use more colors, you should utilize colors through the color shade of a single with the 2 colors or close to them on large wheel. You can also just look for a Graffiti within our blog or on Google Image search and copy the colour scheme. If you are a beginner, this approach might fit well.

STEP 5: Drawing the shadows Choose an area below the Graffiti where all of the shadow blocks bring about . Like shown inside the photo below. Now choose how big is the blocks should be . I took 1,5cm (1/2 inches) as length in this case .

Now require a ruler and tap into every corner in the Graffiti single .5cm (1/2 inches) long line to the chosen point. Then, connect the lines parallel for the Graffiti outline. The results are blocks, that you can fill with color.

Fill the Blocks with black. If you want more complex shadows you can include fake light spots with brighter areas inside middle transitioning to dark areas for the outside like done inside the example.

STEP 6: Second outline and background The term “Second outline” describes the road throughout the whole Graffiti. In this case I choose the complementary color to orange – blue. As a background I added bubbles and drips within the same color.

STEP 7: Optionally add highlights, your name-tag and the season of creation The gradient as Fill-In maybe is way too boring or seems not complex enough. So you can additional add lines and shapes across the Fill-In. Common shapes are bubbles, rectangles, arrows, refelections or outlines of shapes. Usually they may be colored inside a darker color shade with the color below of which . They can also be added to the background.

To complete your artwork, add your Name-Tag and 4 seasons of creation. If you are or would have been a person in a crew, then add the abbreviation of your crew.
