Graffiti Your Name

How to draw graffiti: the first graffiti piece in 7 steps : You have redrawn your first Graffiti? You have created the first Tag? Nice! So let’s move on !. Graffiti Pieces are extremely complex. To begin , I would recommend you to take your tag and transform it into a Graffiti Piece. Every Graffiti Piece consists of the next parts: 1. The Fill-In: colored areas 2. the outline: colored or black line around the fill-ins 3. a 3D-shadow 4. an identification 5. a second outline throughout the whole piece 6. optionally: the tag name from the sprayer 7. optionally: highlights 8. optionally: 4 seasons of creation.

I use the subsequent materials: 1. regular notepad – e.g.: printing paper 2. soft uncolored eraser 3. pencil with 2B mine hardness 4. Fine Liners for Highlights and small areas 5. Copic Markers Multiliner 0.5 for outlines 6. At least a basis list of Copic Ciao markers for Fill-ins. I have the important set of Copic Ciao markers markers!. So, let’s dive directly into it:

How I started to attract graffiti. Starting-out is always difficult. This is why I want to explain how I did it . My first Graffiti was “Limp Bizkit” from the album cover from “Significant other”. Do you know it? I loved the band whilst still being love em and decided to draw it since it impressed me. I was lucky and was quite pleased with my first drawing.

So that is my first task for you is: 1. get a pencil 2. get yourself a sheet of paper 3. receive an eraser 4. search for a Graffiti you prefer with Google Image Search, in places you can easily identify the letters. For Instance “simple style Graffiti” might be used as a search term . 5. and draw it!

Maybe you may need a number of tries initially . This is nothing to bother about . Noone can be a professional immediately . So practice, practice, practice, practice! I know your family will enjoy it!

In the first part I will speak about how I started and provide you with a first hint steps to start out. The second part is a tutorial, which can be split into two parts. The first part has the steps for your first Graffiti Tag. The second one is about transforming the Graffiti Tag in a Graffiti Piece. Let’s go!

Draw the first tag. After you have done your first Graffiti, head to our Collection of Graffiti Letters. Think about a name you would like to use as being a sprayer. No ideas yet? Just start with your real name! I provide several designs per letter. You can search for letters by simply clicking on the buttons at the top . Create a Graffiti Tag this way . So in depth : 1. have a marker on this occasion ; not only a pencil; Tags look much better if you are using the correct marker – I used a Edding 500 Marker for the example Tag below. The Grog Cutter 08 XFP – Death Black is often a very good marker as well and way cheaper . 2. get a small note 3. Go to our variety of Graffiti Letters 4. Search for the letters to your name Example. I choose the phrase “Ether”. 5. You can optionally add drips, arrows and big serifs as highlights for a Tag like I did.

STEP 1: Trace your graffiti tag. If you used a marker you will probably see through the Graffiti Tag should you put a small note on it . So your first task is it in order to the edges with the lines which has a pencil. But leave some space relating to the edge of the marker as well as your new pencil line. So the letter gets bigger. The result will want to look just like the image shown below. Not that bad actually, but we would like to improve.

STEP 2: Improve the graffiti. The form in the whole Graffiti is very important too . The “E” at the beginning is bigger than the “R” in the end . So I made a decision to make it smaller and add arrows on both sides to ensure it is a tight form.(red) I also added serifs or made them more complicated .(blue circles). In typography, a serif could be the small extra stroke bought at the conclusion from the main vertical and horizontal strokes of some letters. In Graffiti you frequently rely on them to help you Piece more technical . I also added forms which improve the dynamic with the graffiti and help it become more complex.

The result looks much like the image below. This step usually implies a lot of trials and errors and takes a little while . So don’t be sad if your Graffiti immediately doesn`t appear to be you would like to . Even in the event you are practised to draw in Graffiti, this will require a little while and intensive use with the eraser.

STEP 3: Redraw the lines which has a fineliner. The next step is easier . Take your Copic Markers Multiliner 0.5 or even a Fineliner pen and redraw your pencil lines. Wait time afterwards to let along with dry and after that erase all the pencil lines. The result need to look such as this.

A cheap printer with copy function like Canon PIXMA MG3620 or possibly a similar product have to do the job . I use a previous version on this printer series and delay well but there are various others which work quite similar.

STEP 4: Color your graffiti piece. To make the coloring more complicated , I recommend one to always draw gradients. In this case i colored the whole Graffiti Piece in a big gradient. If you need to you could make your piece to check even more complex , you will need to give a different gradient to each and every letter. The Copic Ciao markers have become beneficial to drawing gradients. I have not achieved it with another marker yet.

Which color scheme to decide on ? In general I recommend you to use complementary colors for – foreground and background – or – fill-ins and shadows. If you would like to use more colors, you need to use colors through the color shade of a single with the 2 colors or all-around them on large wheel. You can also just visit a Graffiti within our blog or on Google Image search and copy large scheme. If you are a beginner, this approach might fit well.

STEP 5: Drawing the shadows Choose a point below the Graffiti where every one of the shadow blocks bring about . Like shown inside the photo below. Now choose how big the blocks must be . I took 1,5cm (1/2 inches) as length in this case .

Now please take a ruler and combine every corner in the Graffiti a 1 hour .5cm (1/2 inches) long line on the chosen point. Then, connect the lines parallel towards the Graffiti outline. The results are blocks, that you can fill with color.

Fill the Blocks with black. If you want more advanced shadows you can include fake light spots with brighter areas within the middle transitioning to dark areas around the outside like done in the example.

STEP 6: Second outline and background The term “Second outline” describes the line throughout the whole Graffiti. In this case I choose the complementary color to orange – blue. As an identification I added bubbles and drips in the same color.

STEP 7: Optionally add highlights, your name-tag and the entire year of creation The gradient as Fill-In maybe is just too boring or seems not complex enough. So you can additional add lines and shapes higher than the Fill-In. Common shapes are bubbles, rectangles, arrows, refelections or outlines of shapes. Usually they may be colored in the darker color shade in the color below of which . They can be also added to the background.

To complete your artwork, add your Name-Tag and the year of creation. If you are or would have been a member of a crew, then include the abbreviation of one`s crew.
